One of the first questions I am asked when I talk about EcoAthlete as a resource is "What do I do with my spent bike grease?" Over the next couple of entries I'll post some ideas for this. But first, I'll start a list of alternative bike greases out there.
I have not yet completed much research, but I did find a great soy-based lubricant made by Ernesto, called "Ernesto Lube." Ernesto Lube is a biodegradable soy-based lubricant made for bike chains. Ernesto says it performs on par with synthetic oils and is longlasting. Ernesto Lube adds only non-toxic additives to make it tacky (or stick to metal).
The product is made in the Midwest, from soy beans. The lube comes in 4oz bottles, and it seems that it's four friends working together to fill them up and run the business. Get your first bottle for $6.00, and then you send your bottle back for future refills for $3.00! Check them out at: www.ernestolube.com
