About EcoAthlete

Ecoathlete connects athletes with ecologically sound athletic gear, provides product reviews, offers green training tips, and includes general information about sustainability initiatives in athletics.  Basically, the site is built on the philosophy of "Be the Change You Want to See" and serves as a resource for athletes who want to integrate sustainable living choices into their athletic endeavors.

EcoAthlete Focuses On:   Nau Shelter Jackets

1) Promoting Ecologically Sound Athletic Products

Athletes love quick-drying synthetic apparel. It performs, stretches, and wicks moisture. Unfortunately, synthetic fibers are mostly petroleum based, their production is resource intensive, and they take a long time to break down in a landfill at the end of their lifetime. EcoAthlete demos and links to apparel made from natural or recycled fibers. Support the companies promoted here to greatly reduce your environmental impact and look great while you're at it!

2) Recycling Athletic Gear

Athletes frequently upgrade perfectly well functioning gear for new products that make us faster, lighter, and more efficient. Our quest for high performance materials drives product development. This is part of athletic competition that we support and love, but we want to encourage R&D of ecologically sound high performance gear.  EcoAthlete encourages cradle-to cradle thinking in sports gear manufacturing, promoting companies that use recycling and waste elimination operations. Moreover, we offer links to programs that will recycle or donate your used equipment! The Nau Shelter jackets pictured here are made of 100% recycled plastic and use natural dyes, and the Nulethics capri running tights pictured below are made of a bamboo & recycled polyester blend.

3) Reducing the Athlete's Footprint

Athletes travel the world in search of adventures and the best race.
We log a significant amount of miles by car and plane to get to our
training and race venues. Our events also tend to generate waste that
is not (yet) being recycled. Our collective athletic ecological
footprint is no small peanuts. EcoAthlete offers tips on
reducing travel impact, links to green races, and ideas for
daily training habits or other changes that can make a big difference.

4) Improve Products and Events for Future Athletes

EcoAthlete.org is a resource to begin shifting the athletic paradigm
toward ecological balance and carbon neutrality. Alternative products
exist, athletes are interested in learning more, and many of us will
buy ecologically sound products when available and affordable. Future
athletes must have the same opportunity to participate in events, and
the same access to the outdoors and open space as we do now.
